The need to monitor parameters such as oxygen, pH, and carbon dioxide in explosive environments can prove to be a challenge for many manufacturers of sensors. Any systems which have electrical power going to them or which can produce a spark create a risk of explosion. Traditionally, this risk has been minimized by enclosing equipment in an explosion proof container or by isolating the explosive gas. Polestar’s optical sensors have no electricity at the point of measurement, and the fiber optic cable which connects the sensor to the transmitter can be made long enough to remotely station the transmitter in a safe area. This results in a sensor which can be operated in Class 1, Div 1 environments. The sensor, the sensor housing or probe, and the fiber optic cable are designed to withstand harsh operating conditions.
